Domestic and Dating Violence Fact Sheet

  • Domestic violence is the number one cause of injury to women---more than rapes, muggings, and auto accidents combined.

  • One out of every three women murdered in the US is killed by a husband or boyfriend.

  • A woman is beaten every 15 seconds.

  • Nearly half of all women who have been abused tell no one.

  • It is a myth that battering does not occur within certain ethnic or religious groups, or that middle class and affluent women are not battered, or that educated and professional men don’t batter.

  • It is also a myth that women stay because they like being abused and that if a woman wanted to leave, she could.

  • Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year. Nearly half (43%) of dating college women report experiencing violent and abusive dating behaviors.

  • Teens and young adults may minimize or romanticize abuse, and interpret jealousy, possessiveness, and abuse as signs of love. This makes them vulnerable because they do not instinctively define abuse as a problem.

  • Teens rarely tell or seek help from adults.

  • Families and victims need to recognize the warning signs of abuse as well as the safest way to end a dangerous relationship.
